A Conversation with Donald Root

Donald Root is the Chief of Central Public Services of the Free Library of Philadelphia.  After working as an academic librarian for many years earlier in his career, Donald made the transition to the world of public libraries in 1987 when he came to FLP, where he has served in several different administrative capacities. In this fascinating interview, Donald discusses his many successes as a leading player in the FLP management structure as well as the daily challenges faced by a central library administrator. Donald also discusses the strategies that FLP has used over the past two years to cope with the budget cuts that made international headlines when the City of Philadelphia threatened to close the libraries.
